What a heat transfer is
A heat transfer is a decoration printed onto a carrier film or paper, shipped to you finished, and bonded to a garment with heat, time and pressure. You buy the artwork already produced. The only production step left in your building is pressing it.
That is the whole commercial argument for the format. Compared to cut vinyl, custom heat transfers remove the cutting, the weeding and the multi-stage layering. Insta makes this point directly on its own transfer pages: unlike vinyl and cad-cut, the transfers do not require the extra labour and equipment, and the application takes seconds once the garment is dressed on the platen.
Compared to screen printing in-house, you skip screens, emulsion, flash cure and reclaim. You trade a per-unit cost for a near-zero setup cost per job, which is why the format dominates short runs, reorders, names-and-numbers work and anything with a photo in it.
The transfer families, and what each one is for
“Heat transfer” is a category, not a product. Insta publishes a distinct product page for each family, and they are not interchangeable — the fabric you are decorating is what picks the transfer, not the other way around.

The numbers that decide whether it lasts
Every transfer family publishes its own time / temperature / pressure / peel combination, and those four values are the whole job. Guessing them is the single most common reason a transfer cracks, lifts at the edge or ghosts after three washes.

InstaGlo runs a different window entirely — 15 seconds, 290–300 °F, 30–40 lbs, and a cold peel rather than a hot one. Two transfers from the same manufacturer, two incompatible recipes. Always press to the sheet that shipped with the transfer, and test on a scrap of the actual blank before you commit a production run.
Artwork limits are published too
Insta DTF specifies a 1 pt positive and 2 pt negative minimum line weight for white, and 2 pt in both directions for colour. InstaGlo asks for 2.5 pt in both directions. Artwork thinner than that will not hold. Fix it at the design stage; it cannot be fixed at the press.
Storage, because transfers do expire
Transfers are a consumable with a dated shelf life, not inventory you can sit on indefinitely.
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
If a job is going to reorder over several months, order to the reorder cycle rather than buying a two-year supply up front.
What it costs, and how you get a number
Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Artwork complexity, colour count, imprint dimensions and quantity all move the number, so a published price list would be meaningless.
