A sprinkler system install is a design job first
The trenching is the visible part. The part that determines whether the system works is the design that happens before anyone touches the lawn.
A designer walks the property and measures four things: available water pressure and flow at the source, sun exposure across the day, soil type and grade, and the planting mix. Those four inputs decide how many zones the property needs and what kind of head goes in each one. A zone is a group of heads that run together off a single valve. Everything in a zone gets the same runtime, so everything in a zone needs the same water requirement.
That is why a lawn and a shrub bed cannot share a zone. Turf wants shorter, more frequent cycles from rotors or rotary nozzles. Beds and foundation plantings want slow, deep delivery from drip line. Put them together and you will overwater one to keep the other alive.

The number of zones is set by flow, not by preference. If the water meter delivers 10 gallons per minute and a zone of rotors needs 12, that zone gets split. This is the most common corner cut in a cheap bid, and it produces dry rings around every head.
What happens on install day
A typical residential lawn irrigation system install runs one to three days depending on lot size and zone count.
- Utility locates. Called in before the crew arrives. Non-negotiable, and it is on the contractor, not you.
- Point of connection. The crew ties into the water supply and sets the backflow preventer.

Backflow prevention is not optional in Maryland
An irrigation system connects your drinking water to a network of pipes sitting in soil. A backflow preventer is the device that stops that soil water from being siphoned back into the house supply during a pressure drop.
