Why Middle Tennessee systems freeze even in a mild winter
Nashville is not Minnesota, and that is exactly the problem. Because the region gets long stretches of 50-degree December weather, plenty of homeowners skip winterization entirely and get away with it for a season or two. Then a single Arctic outbreak drops the overnight low into the teens for three days, and the water sitting in the backflow assembly above grade turns to ice.
Water expands roughly nine percent as it freezes. Inside a brass backflow preventer or a PVC lateral, that expansion has nowhere to go, so it splits the housing. The damage is not visible in January. It shows up in April, when the system is pressurized for the first time and a homeowner finds water fountaining out of the assembly next to the house.
That is the core case for sprinkler winterization in Nashville: the risk is not that a mild winter will destroy your system. It is that the one hard freeze in an otherwise mild winter costs more than a decade of winterization visits.
- Above-grade components fail first. Backflow preventers, exposed valve manifolds and anything in an unheated crawl space or garage wall.
- Buried pipe is usually fine. Middle Tennessee frost depth rarely reaches lateral lines, which is why the risk is concentrated at the components you can see.
- Sprinkler heads hold water too. Water trapped in a pop-up body freezes, cracks the riser seal, and the head weeps all next season.
What actually happens during a sprinkler blowout
A blowout is not "turning the system off." It is a controlled evacuation of every drop of water from the mainline, the laterals and the heads using compressed air, zone by zone. A competent Nashville crew works through it in a fixed order:
- Shut down and isolate the water supply at the irrigation shutoff, then relieve pressure at the backflow test cocks.
- Connect the compressor at the blowout port downstream of the backflow assembly, never upstream through the potable side.
- Blow one zone at a time with the controller opening each valve, starting with the zone farthest from the compressor.
- Run each zone in short bursts until the heads discharge mist rather than water, then move on. Long continuous runs overheat gears and melt nozzle internals.
- Drain the backflow assembly, open the test cocks to a 45-degree position, and leave the ball valves partially open so any residual water has room to expand.
- Shut the controller down or set it to the off/rain position so it does not try to run a cycle in February.
The unglamorous step in that list is the last one. A surprising share of spring service calls trace back to a controller that ran a zone in mid-winter against a drained, depressurised system.
Air pressure limits, and why they matter more than air volume
The single most common way a blowout damages a system is too much pressure. Irrigation manufacturers publish conservative caps, and they are worth knowing before anyone connects a compressor to your mainline:
- 80 PSI maximum for rigid PVC laterals, per standard manufacturer guidance from Hunter and Rain Bird.
- 50 PSI maximum for flexible polyethylene pipe, which is far more common than homeowners expect in retrofit work.
- Volume, not pressure, moves the water. An adequate blowout wants high CFM at low PSI. A pancake compressor from a hardware store delivers the opposite and is the usual culprit behind blown seals and cracked fittings.
This is also why the DIY route so often ends badly. The rental compressor that clears a 12-zone system safely is a towable unit, not something that fits in a trunk. If you are weighing the do-it-yourself option, price the rental honestly against a professional visit before deciding.

When to schedule winterization in Nashville
The target window is after the last meaningful watering of the season and before the first hard freeze, which in Middle Tennessee generally means from mid-October through November depending on the year. Waiting for the forecast to show a freeze is a losing strategy, because so does everyone else, and the schedule fills in the space of a week.
Two practical scheduling notes:
- Book before the first cold snap is forecast, not after. Irrigation contractors across Davidson, Williamson and Sumner counties compress the entire winterization season into roughly six weeks.
- Bundle it. Aqueduct's annual irrigation maintenance agreements include winterization along with spring activation, seasonal system audits and priority scheduling, which removes the annual scramble entirely.
If your system has known problems going into the winter, the winterization visit is the right time to document them. Aqueduct issues a written audit report with seasonal service, so a cracked head or a leaking valve found in November is on paper before the spring sprinkler startup conversation in March.
What winterization does not cover
Winterization is a freeze-protection service, not a repair visit. Two things routinely surprise homeowners:
Backflow testing is separate. Tennessee backflow assemblies protecting a potable supply require periodic certified testing, which is a distinct service with its own paperwork. Aqueduct handles backflow testing and service, but a blowout does not include or substitute for a certification test.
Existing damage still needs repair. If a zone was already failing in September, air will not fix it. Blowouts frequently reveal problems, and the honest sequence is winterize now, repair in spring, since irrigation repair work on a drained system in January is neither cheaper nor easier.
One more scheduling overlap worth knowing: the same weeks that fill with winterization calls are the weeks holiday lighting crews book out.
